Our last day in Queensland we went to Rainforest Habitat, a conservation education centre cum zoo. We stayed all day as it was an outstanding opportunity to get up close and personal with native birds and animals. We got to hand-feed kangaroos and wallabies, stroke a koala (who obligingly woke up for us) -your hand smells of eucalyptus form their fur. We watched fruit bats (flying foxes) really close up as they raided the bird tables for snacks and cleaned their faces on their wings so you could see the impression of their little foxy faces imprinted on the leathery wings. There are huge walk-through aviaries where we spent ages watching kookaburra, bright parrots, elegant storks, dusky grey herons lots of other lovely creatures.
We only had one day in Sydney after returning from Queensland so we bid farewell to ian, Colleen, Holly and Bonnie who were all so kind (even getting up at 4am to take us to the airport) and such good company, and set off for New Zealand.
