Hello, and welcome to the most recent installment of my journey! I'm a little turned around... lets see... today is thursday but I'm writing about wednesday, right! The day started out pretty normal. For my "out and about" I joined a group of people who went to a cafe... a pretty famous cafe in the city. It's call La Paroquilla and it has a quirky tradition of serving a drink called Lechero, where you are served a large glass about a quarter full of really strong coffee and then a waiter comes to the table and flourishingly fills the cup with hot milk from a big silver tea pot. However, you have to prompt the server to come to your table by hitting the glass with your spoon, so needless to say it's a little bit noisy in there, but the lechero is really good, even for a non-coffee drinker.
Class was a bit frustrating yesterday. I think by day 4 I had a spanish hang-over. It's been so long since I had actual spanish classes that I'm just really out of practice, but in 3 weeks I'm sure I'll have it down.
After class I decided to go shopping to buy a new backpack for a trip I'm planning to take this weekend. I got some directions from Elia (who works at the school and also lives in the house I'm staying in, with her sister Irma who works at the school also, and Elia's little boy, Cesar who is 3 and cutest damn kid ever... sorry that was a lot of information in parenthesis) and I was ready to take the bus into town.
So.... I grabbed the bus I'm accustomed to taking and took it, the wrong way, hoping it would eventually loop around. Well, it didn't, and the bus driver made me get off the bus :-). I had a good chuckle at myself, got some ice cream and waited for the right bus. I caught it and rode out to the mall, found my new backpack, crossed a crazy street full of traffic and caught the bus back home. It was a wonderful little victory, even if it started with a bit of an error.
Oh! I'm here in Mexico during presidential election time. The election is less than a month away and the rallying for candidates is going strong. On the bus ride home we got stuck in traffic for a few minutes because a group of people were waving flags, offering bumper stickers and plastering cabs with signs for their candidate. It was quite a sight. I have talked to a few of the staff at the school about the election, but no one really wants to sit down and tell me about each of the candidates, so I'll keep trying to find out.
And one other little fun part of yesterday- I was walking home from the school and I heard someone tuning a guitar, so my nosey self had to check it out and I found a sort of garage band with a veracruz twist... a bunch of guys singing about being drunk and in love. It was terrific. I stayed for a while, but then it was time for bed.
I'm sure you're all getting tired of me saying it, but, thanks for staying in touch with me through the guestbook. You're all terrific! Hugs, Tracey
