day of the devil

Hello all! Things are going quite well here. Yesterday was much better as far as classes were concerned. But, first things first.

I started the morning with a lovely breakfast, and then grabbed a few people and hopped on a bus to Boca del Rio, a little city on the southern edge of Veracruz. It is the cutest little place. The houses and shops were shorter and seemed more quaint than in Veracruz. The beaches were cleaner and the pace a bit slower. We walked around the city and past the edge of the gulf, and all the sudden we realized that we had to go to the bathroom, so this nice man sitting outside of a grocery store grabbed his keys and opened up his shop two doors away so we could use the bathroom, but after two of us went, the toilet ran out of water, so we had to wait until we got back to school. Ahh... Mexico.

Like I said, classes went well and I feel like I'm getting into the groove more. We started off class with an explaination to our teacher (Lucy) why the day was special (because it was 6-6-06). It was a funny conversation because there really is no exact word to explain the significance, so we settled on "el dia del Diablo" or day of the devil. I kept expecting something sinister to happen that day, but it came and went with nothing bad in sight.

After class I went on a walk up the beach. There really aren't a lot of American tourists here, and I am pretty obviously American I suppose, so every taxi that went by either honked or flashed it's lights to see if I needed a ride. While I appreciate knowing that I will always have transportation, I got a little tired of waving them away. I returned from my walk and went to dinner with another student at a little cafe that was tucked away. We sat outside and enjoyed the breeze, the empanadas and the two guys that came strolling by with guitars and terrible singing voices. It was one of those magical moments you have when you travel.

The rest of the night I listed to some music and did some self imposed homework. It was lovely, but I got a little homesick. SO, thanks again for all your notes, it makes me feel more connected. Talk to you all again soon!!! Hugs, Tracey
