Hello all! Here's the scoop:
Yesterday was a "free day" at the school, meaning no class, so we took a small tour of the city. Two other students and two charlantes (native speakers who take us through the city and keep us talking) took a double decker bus tour of Veracruz. We passed through the down town area, past several little shops, by a fort from hundreds of years ago, by the sea wall and beaches and a thousand other things. It was a great introduction to the city.
Veracruz is a lovely little place. The buildings are painted bright colors, the streets are cracked and uneven, the trees are beautiful and everyone says good morning. Today (monday) was my first day of structured classes. In the morning a group of us caught a bus to the city center, walked a bit, and the took a taxi back home. We started class at 10, went til 12:30. Started again at 3 and stopped for the day at 5. It was a lot more difficult than I expected. The other women in my class are much more advanced than I am right now, and I need to pick up the pace a bit. After classes I walked with two other students (jessica and alexis) to the city center, ate dinner (ensaladia rusa... yum) and walked back home. I really like the feeling of safety in this city. I've been told that the most dangerous part of walking on the streets at night are the streets themselves, because there are holes and cracks everywhere... and now I know that's true, because I almost bit it on several occasions!
It is a little more difficult to get to the computer than I expected, so I'll write as often as possible, but probably less than I'd like. Thank you all for checking in and for leaving me little notes. It's soooo great to hear from everyone. Hugs!!! Tracey
