Coffee and Cocaine

2006-05-20, Bogota, Colombia

So we made it to Colombia with no flaws. Iīve heard all the stories but I havenīt seen any cocaine, and Iīve only seen the Nabob guy once. So far we have had no muggings or anything of the sort, but donīt worry, Iīm sure they will come. I didnīt want to bring my camera here because it would make me a great target to get mugged. While we are here we will predominantly be working with street kids which we got a taste for today. We went to slum where apparently, as Laura learned from a few stories, quite a few "Killers" live. Supposedly one of them had just killed a cop a little while ago. The kids were awesome and we got some great pictures. We had some dramas and songs ready to do but a group of old people came along to hand out food and clothing. We told them to wait until we were finished before handing anything out but they jumped right into it and then left within minutes. So the kids got what they wanted and didnt want to listen to us anymore. It worked out alright though because we got to play with the kids, in the pouring rain none the less. Last night we were practicing one of our dramas when we were interupted by one of the guys that lives in a house that is joined to ours. Little background info: we are staying in a house that used to be a Baptist church and one third of it is a house for street kids that have been there for up to 10 years. So the guy that interupted us is the guy that is pretty much the dad of the house who has worked there for 9 years and heīs only 28 years old. So he said that they had made too much dinner and they wanted us to come and eat with them. It was about 9pm and we hadn`t eaten and hadn't planned on it either but we decided to check it out. It turned out they were having lasagna made by an Italian woman from New York. The best part is that during breakfast that morning the girls were talking about how they wanted to make lasagna one of the nights for dinner but we came to the conclusion that we donīt have the money to eat luxury food. So we ended up having this amazing lasagna and getting entertained by Alex (Dad) salsa dancing. I donīt know much about Salsa but this guy is amazing. He ended up teaching a few of us while Solveig and I (Adam) were taught some breakdancing moves in the living room by a 10 year old girl. It was an amazing night. This place is really amazing. Itīs quite sad however just driving through the city and seeing all the people living under the bridges and all the kids performing for the cars stopped at red lights. This city is known for their street kids. Take all the homeless people in Canada and multiply it by 3 and you might be getting close.

Anyway, I donīt really know what else to say, weīve only been here 3 days. So yeah, we'll hopefully get some pictures up if I ever get the courage to take my camera out on the streets. I actually want to get mugged for the experience except not at the expense of my camera, maybe a few bucks would be worth it.
