I and my wife (Charles and Dewi) visited Sonder for the first time not long ago. It is a very beautiful small town. We stayed there for a few weeks then we continued our trip.
Sonder is a small town in the northern part of Sulawesi Island. It is under the administration of Minahasa regency, the Province of North Sulawesi.
For your information, Indonesia consists of 32 provinces, North Sulawesi is one of them.
Sonder is located in the highland. The local people usually call the villages within Sonder’s administration as Sumonder. These villages are Leilem, Kolongan Atas, Tounelet, Talikuran, Kauneran, Sendangan, Rambunan, Sawangan, Tincep, and Timbukar. Every village of Sonder sub-regency is very unique. Leilem is famous for its furniture home industry. In Kolongan Atas, there is Siloam hospital, the oldest one in the region. Next to Kolongan Atas village, there is Tounelet village. It is located at the edge of a hill. People can enjoy the beauty of Sonder’s scenery from here. There are a number of Waruga stones in Tounelet. In the ancient times, the Minahasan ancestors buried their heroes, chief and priests in the stones. Tounelet’s villagers are also famous for their traditional cookies. If you visit Tounelet, don’t forget to order cookies from the villagers. In Sendangan, Kauneran, and Sawangan, the villagers’ means of livelihood are fishery, traditional restaurants, clove plantation and vegetables. There are a lot of saguer trees (a kind of palm tree) in Rambunan and Sawangan. People tap the juice of Saguer and make sugar from it. Rambunan is considered as the best producer of palm sugar in the world. Palm sugar is one of the most important ingredients of many of Indonesian cuisines.
