This is my first journal entry in several months. I left India back in November and ran home to Oregon for a while. Quite a while. After the holidays with my family, I worked at a ski resort until I tore a ligament in my knee during a semi-nasty fall. I needed to take it easy for a while so I headed to Costa Rica with a friend of mine from Boston.
My God there are a lot of Americans in Costa Rica. It's funny. Most of the people I'd run into would say that Costa Rica is one of the only places Americans can still travel safely. Complete bullshit. Those people are foolish for thinking anyplace has become off limits. Wherever you go, don't be obnoxious and you will most likely be fine. Surrender to local culture. I'm not going to continue on any kind of diatribe on travelling etiquette.
Costa Rica was beautiful. My friend Shirley and I both had a great time. We went swimming in the hot springs at the foot of a volcano. We explored the cloud forests near Monteverde. We travelled to the famed hippy hang out of Montezuma and indulged in the night life and easy living of the people there. Tropical waterfalls, amazing white beaches, beautiful people. Costa Rica is a great vacation.
However, give me a choice and I'll pick the cold mountains of the Himalaya over the sandy beaches of anywhere, anyday. (Except for those days that I'm in the cold mountains, in which case I would probably choose a warm sunny beach.)
What's next? I'm not sure. I'll most likely head back to Nepal in July.
Thanks for reading.
