What was supposed to be another routine evening in studio quickly became an impromptu town party. At about 10:30 pm as studio was in full swing suddenly the lights went out and our basement room was in complete utter darkness. The entire town of Castilgion Fiorentino had just lost all electricity. Using the light from the screens of our iPods we were able to make our way up the stairs out into the courtyard were everyone was gathering. We stood around and talked a bit and I decided to go get my camera and on my way I ran into my buddy Huy. I told him to grab his roommate, Jole’s, candles and lets go explore the town. We had a blast out walking around the centuries old town by candlelight as it has been done for hundreds of years prior to electricity. Before long the streets were full of locals out talking and passing out candles, occasionally we would walk by an apartment that had back up power, and these places acted as gathering points for the locals. When we neared the Velvet Underground bar we could see they too had backup power and that the place was packed. Huy and I got a beer and found a seat as a band began to warm-up and play. The band, Azteca, a Santana cover band was as good as the beer! Many other students who had been in studio were also there. Noah, a friend from CSU had two visitors in town from the states, Tome and Cassie. We hit it off immediately and got some more drinks. The band played for a long time and when they finished we all went up the hill to the other bar, Rejro’s, for pizza and more drink. After pizza and fried cheese we all made our way down the hill home. A night of good intentions in studio ended in an even better night without electricity and new friends!
