Early start today. 3.15am to catch my shuttle bus to copan ruins. The ruins are located just 12km outside the Guatemalan border, in Honduras. It’s a 6 hour drive from Antigua but because it was a sunday we made it 4.30 hours. There were two other travelers that were making the trip as well. Both Australian females. I wish I could say that the countryside was beautiful but I was asleep for most of it. The only time I got up was during the immigration process. Exiting Guatemala and entering Honduras required a fee as well as a stamp in the passport.
The currency in Honduras is the lempira. During the immigration prcess several people come up to you to change your currency. Currently the exchange rate is 2 guatemalan quetzals to 1 lempira.
Copan is a small village and the ruins are just 1km from it. The difference between Guatemala and here is immediate. The place is so much cleaner. The streets are not as littered as Guatemala. The weather is also different than Antigua and lake atitlan. It’s much more humid.
I explored the ruins under cloudy skies, and during the trip was greeted with rain. It was pretty brief but the increased humidity was not pleasant. I was a bit underwhelmed by the ruins. No doubt due to the high expectations. Still it was a sight to behold. Imagine how much time, effort and skill it took to create such lasting landmarks? Such a testament to the mayan civilization. I look forward to going to see the granddaddy of em all, Tikal. But that’s still a few days away. I will be headed for rio dulce next.
