Second Day Here

2006-04-18, Schifflange, Luxembourg

Hi to everyone,

Today is probably the sunniest and warmest day for me so far. I will shortly get back out to enjoy more of it. I bought my lunch before I left this morning and it is already 2:30, so I guess I will need to stop and have it soon. I bought a special small iced cake at the bakery so I guess I will call it my birthday cake today.

Just touring around. Used my trian pass for the first time yesterday. Went from Brussels to Luxembourg City then by a local train to here. I was in the observation car on the upper level. As an adult, when you buy a train pass, you have no choice but to go first class. When I got settled in on the upper deck I took out my journal and started to catch up on my entries. There was a woman with two kids in the seats in front of me. I actally was going to move away because of the noise but then the conductor came by to check the tickets, she had to move to the 2nd class cars. I wasn't really to disappointed to see them move. It would have been her or me anyway. Yesterday was a holiday here and I found everything locked up when I arrived in this small town of Schifflange in the early afternoon. The only things open were the cafes and drug store. Cafes here don't serve food but really are pubs. I walked into one wanting to find out if it was a food place as well and I was told that the restaurants did't open till after 6:oo pm. Because of all the walking around though I was beginning to feel like there was not a place to stay either. I found one hostel locked up tigher than a drum and even the restaurant attached was closed. I guess I just picked the wrong time to check it out because later on someone opened up for me when they saw me trying the door. It is a great hostel. Brand new and breakfast is included. I am staying there tonight and then tomorrow I will head somewhere else. Perhaps to Orval Abbey near Florenvillle.

I will have about an hours walk back to where I am staying from here which is Esch. Beautiful place and a lot bigger than I thought. The girl at the tourist office said that the population in Esch was about 19,000. I was told you could rent a bike here and actually that was one of my reasons for walking here. No bikes for hire here though. This is iron ore country still. There must be steelworks also because I saw a train go by with steel girders on it.

I will close for now. Take care bye for now, Dan
