At 7:30 I caught a bus to the pier and boarded a boat for the two-hour journey to Mu Koh Ang Thong which consists of 42 separate islands in the gulf of Thailand. I sat next to a honeymoon couple that pretty much summed up everything scary to me in a relationship. At 7:30 in the morning the man wanted to know if his wife was going to snorkel at the same time as him four hours later. They were so dependant on each other, she wouldn’t get off the boat without his help and he wouldn’t swim without her. I don’t know how people get that way but it is scary to start off so dependant… I know I’m off the deep end on the other side of the dependence scale and it has it’s own problems. The marine park is where many scenes from the movie “The Beach” staring Leonardo De Caprio was filmed. It was really pretty. I hiked up a series of cool tree-house like steps, ladders, bridges and balconies to the top of a hill in the middle of Mae Koh Island where there is an emerald green salt-water lagoon and then further up the mountain is a wonderful view of all of the 42 islands in the marine park. It was a nice and casual trip out on the boat and I enjoyed hanging out on the beaches. We also stopped on Wua Ta Lap Island where I met three French guys from Paris… initially I found them obnoxious and arrogant, later we got to talking and they were nice only one of them spoke English and that is why at first they appeared arrogant. I initially planned on spending more time exploring and staying on islands other than Koh Samoi but I found such a nice place and kept meeting friendly people so I don’t regret staying in one place but I’m glad I did the day trips to see the other islands.
