The Old Dog

1999-10-14, Maputo, Mozambique

An old filthy dog
hobbled down the street.
His big brown eyes
were longing for a little bite to eat.
He stared into the window
of a lovely bakery.
There was a loaf of fresh bread
sitting where the dog could see.
He licked his longing chops,
and gave a little whine.
Surely he was thinking,
"Oh if only that bread was mine!"
The baker saw the dog,
and hit it with a broom.
He yelped and limped away,
"Now don't you come back any time soon!"
Now the dog saw a boy,
he looked a lot like him.
He was also hungry
and had an injured limb.
The little boy was crying
a tear ran down his cheek.
Then a big kid grabbed him
and the little boy was weak
A growl started in the dog's gut,
and worked out through his throat.
He charged at the bully
and sank his teeth into his coat.
The big boy screamed with terror
and let out a cry of pain.
Now the fight was on!
Which one of them would gain?
The bully reached for his pen-knife
and waved it in the air.
The dog quickly retreated,
how much did he really care?
The child turned to run,
but the bully caught his shirt.
The dog was filled with rage.
He stood ready and alert.
He attacked the heartless bully,
and dragged him to the ground.
Then the bully jabbed his knife
into the dog's bony crown.
The dog lay helpless
in a pool of blood.
When the boy saw what he'd done
He only laughed and shrugged.
He forgot about the child,
and ran away with a smile.
But the sad little boy,
held the dog for a while.
He'd given up his life
to save a hurting kid.
Jesus loved us too,
and that's exactly what He did.
