We are in the old colonial city of San Cristobal. There are lots of churches, galleries, markets, and people. Tons of tourists everywhere leads to tons of Mexican kids selling bracelets, candy, and other trinkets. Itīs strange to see three year olds with stuff for sale. There is such a large contrast between people with and without money here in Mexico, even when taking tourists out of the equation. Itīs weird and difficult to see, but easy to ignore if you want.

Our few days in Chiapa de Corzo was punctuated by the final parade of their 3 week long 'Festival of January'. The most dramatic moment was when we were in a huge crowd, wall-to-wall with people, and were getting confetti chucked in our hair, and watching as hundreds of men and boys dressed up in elaborate costumes (wooden masks emulating Conquistadoress, sparkly pants, colorful blanket shawls, etc) came parading down this narrow street shaking loud silver rattles. Of course, the significance of this hundred year old tradition was lost on us. There were beautiful women and girls dressed up in these black floral embroidered skirts and tops, as well, but they stayed out of that little part of the parade. The men were wearing Parachico costumes, in case you want to research this.

Jolahnaīs aunt came and visited for three days, which was really nice. We ended up staying in this phenomenal hotel room overlooking the city last night, which was a nice gift from Nancy. Now, weīre hanging out with at a hostel complete with hammocks, lemon and orange trees, and a puppy (yes!).

Itīs cold here at night.
