2005 CRUISE
Belize 12-22-2005
We spent most of the day on the “ALTUN-HA and the old Belize river tour”. When the tender from the cruise ship dropped us off at the dock there was a tour guide waiting to escort us to the river boat. There we had about a 10 minute ride on the open water before we got to the mouth of the Belize River. Some said they saw Manatee but we didn’t. We did see lots of iguanas, a few crocks and howler monkeys. The crocks were small 2-6 ft but that was big enough for me. The boat ride ended at the “OLDE RIVER TAVERN” (note the spelling) at BURRELL BOOM. There we ate a local lunch did a little shopping at the craft huts while we waited and waited some more for the bus to pick us up. The bus was very modern but the roads from maskall village to the ruins were narrow and full of pot holes. The facilities at the ruins were modern and clean. The tour guide whose name I can not recall was very knowledgeable and spoke very good English. English is the official language in Belize but to many it is their second language. The bus dropped us off near the dock where we had started. There we shopped some more at the FORT STREET TOURISM VILLAGE before tendering back to the ship.
