In Waitomo we did the done thing and went to visit the caves. We went through a small backpacker company 'Rap, Raft and Rock', as it was good value for money. Was slightly sceptical when we turned up at not much more than a shed and containers to get geared up, and since they were running low on batteries for our helmets (but was eventually sorted out)!...


Waitomo Caves

Yesterday we went to the Waitomo caves to do some black water rafting. This involved first Abseiling into the caves about 27m, thsis was really fun. Then we got to look around the caves a bit, the best thing about this was that they were full of Glow worms they were so pretty, the worst part was the cold water in the leaky boots and the spiders and eels...

Today was the day for the long awaited black water rafting trip. What the hell is black water rafting I hear you mumble. Well it’s basically floating around in tubes underground, hopping over rocks, jumping off the odd ledge and generally being cold. No rafts but plenty of water and definitely black (as in dark). Today was a Monday. Mondays were invented by employed people at least 12 years ago and commemorate the beginning of a working week. Excluding farmers and housewives who apparently work hard all the time. For the unemployed like us it’s a day similar to most others but with less other people on the road.
