Penang Travel Stories
"Om Mani padme hung"
15/02/2010 DAY 30 Visa in Thailand ran out today so took a minibus down to Penang in Malaysia. Slightly delayed as a really annoying couple from Devon with even more annoying voices had lost their reciept so the tour lady asked them to get out of the bus as they had no proof of purchase. After a large tantrum they eventually agreed to buy new tickets and then much to my dismay came and sat next to me at the back of the bus (no escape!) where t...

Penang
We left Thailand yesterday and arrived at the Malaysian border, yeh a new country. It only took 8hrs to get here in a minibus. We checked into our hotel and then went for dinner in a food market (this really wasn't good, so we payed up and went and found Pizza Hut). Today we have been on an island trip with the rest of the group and saw a massive laying down Buddha and a British prison. This place has a British feel about it but it has a mixture ...

It was interesting hearing all the corrleations between the Islam and Christi...

Penang
We spent 3 days on Penang in a quirky wee hostel called 100 Cintra Street, it was a cross between a museum and a prison! Clean though but certainly the strangest place we've stayed in. Here we did a walking tour of the city where we visited Fort Cornwallis and got stuck there for half an hour in the pouring rain! Also went to see Khoo Kongsi Temple and Kapitan Keling Mosque. We went up the Komtar builiding which has 60 floors, amazing view...

Escape to Thailand
Often times I wonder: Is my guidebook being ironic, euphamistic, having a little fun with me perhaps? Or maybe there's an issue with perspective. Take this as an example: would you rather have someone describe you as stunning, just absolutley fantastic, simply amazing and leave those you've met a bit disappointed or would you rather be described in plain terms and leave the chance for a pleasant surprise. (If you're a boring, depressing stinkbomb...
